Introduction - Iceland and field trip across the interior of the country

August 21: Field trip to North Iceland, through the highlands of Iceland. Field demonstration of the surface expression of the North Atlantic mantle plume and plume-ridge interaction.

August 22: Lectures and posters: Existence of mantle plumes and their influence on geodynamics and magmatic processes, with particular reference to the North Atlantic mantle plume and its role in shaping the present geologic environment in the area.

August 23: Field trip and demonstration: Krafla volcano and the behaviour of rifting episodes along spreading plate boundaries – the Krafla 1975-1984 rifting episode. Páll Einarsson leads field trip

August 24: Lectures and posters: Formation of oceanic crust: Lessons learned from on-land rifting episodes. Morning session including four keynote lectures on this topic, afternoon session with poster presentations and discussions.

August 25: Field trip and demonstration: Variable volcanic production in Northern Iceland and the Askja caldera.

August 26: Lectures and posters: Environmental effects on volcanic processes. How can environmental conditions influence magmatic processes? How may climate warming influence future volcanism?
Morning session including four keynote lectures on this topic, afternoon session with poster presentations and discussions.

August 27: Field trip and demonstration: Rift-transform interaction and the Tjörnes fracture zone. Coupling of magmatic and tectonic activity. Field trip leader: Bryndís Brandsdóttir

August 28: Lectures and posters: Coupling of magmatic processes.
Studies of volcano-earthquake coupling and other relations between magmatic and other processes (e.g. landslides, tsunamis). Morning session including four keynote lectures on this topic, afternoon session with poster presentations and discussions.

August 29: Drive from North Iceland to Reykjavik

August 30: Departure from Iceland
